Heddal Stave Church is the largest surviving stave church in Norway, a towering medieval wooden structure with stacked dragon-head finials and layered rooflines that feel almost pagoda-like against the surrounding countryside. The building rewards close inspection as well as wide establishing shots, so bring a versatile zoom or switch between a wide angle for the full silhouette and a longer focal length to isolate the carved details and decorative elements at the peaks. Morning light is ideal, hitting the dark tarred wood and giving the structure warmth and depth without harsh shadows; overcast days also work well, keeping contrast manageable. Position yourself from the low grassy churchyard to include headstones in the foreground for added context and depth. The church sits in a quiet rural setting in Telemark, easily reached by road, with open ground around it giving you room to work multiple angles without obstruction. (Notodden, Telemark, Norway)
