Holme Fell

Holme Fell is a compact but characterful hill in the Lake District, rising just 317 metres yet delivering surprisingly expansive views across Tarn Hows, Coniston Water, and the layered fells beyond. The summit ridge is rocky and open, giving you room to move and find compositions that use foreground boulders or heather against the wide backdrop. A wide-angle lens works well here for capturing that sense of depth, while a short telephoto lets you compress the distant fells into tighter, more dramatic frames. The approach through birch woodland also rewards close attention, especially when low morning light filters through the trees. Sunrise is the best time to visit, when mist often sits in the valleys below and the light is soft and directional. Parking is available near Yew Tree Farm off the A593, and the summit is a relatively short walk of under an hour. Autumn brings exceptional colour to the woodland and heath.
