Loughrigg Tarn
Loughrigg Tarn is a small, tranquil lake nestled in the fells above Ambleside, beloved by photographers for its near-perfect reflections of the Langdale Pikes rising dramatically to the north-west. On calm mornings the still water mirrors the surrounding peaks and sky with striking clarity, making a wide-angle lens ideal for capturing the full sweep of the scene. Position yourself along the southern or eastern shore to frame the Pikes across the water, or work in close to the reeds and aquatic plants at the water's edge for foreground interest. Early morning gives you the best chance of glassy reflections and soft, low light before any breeze picks up; overcast days also work well by softening harsh shadows on the fells. The tarn is reached via a short walk from Skelwith Bridge or Rydal, with parking nearby at Elterwater. Wellies or waterproof boots are recommended if you want to get close to the marshy shoreline.
