Holy Trinity Catholic Church is an eye catching red and white brick church that takes up a corner block on Rhomberg Avenue, out in Dubuque's north end. The church's square bell tower stands tall overlooking the surrounding neighbourhoods. Its parish goes back to 1910, formed out of an older German Catholic congregation in the city. The intricate white stonework against the red brick creates amazing contrast that pops in almost any composition. Rhomberg Avenue is wide enough to back off to the far sidewalk and take the whole front, soaring tower and all, in one frame. Getting low and tilting up lets the tower dominate your frame and adds to its imposing feel. The red brick warms up in low sun, so early or late in the day works best. It is still an active parish, so accessing the inside depends on their schedule. You can call ahead if you want to guarantee getting inside.
