Horizontobservatorium

Horizontobservatorium - Photo by Peter H 1 / 1

Perched atop a former coal mining spoil heap in the Ruhr Valley, this striking land art installation features two massive curved concrete arches that frame the sky and track the sun's seasonal path, creating a modern Stonehenge feel with strong geometric lines against open horizons. Shoot from directly between the arches to use them as natural framing devices, or get low and wide with a 16-24mm lens to exaggerate their scale against the sky. The arches glow with built-in illumination after dark, making this a rewarding location for blue hour and night photography, with the lit scales adding an otherworldly quality. Sunrise and sunset align dramatically with the arch orientations depending on the season, so check sun position apps before visiting. The hilltop is exposed and openly accessible, reached by a short walk up from the base; bring a wide angle lens and a tripod for low light work. (Herten, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany)
