Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Monte

Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Monte is a historic church set on Monte hill above Funchal reached by a steep road, cable car, or the famous toboggan route. The church has a bright white exterior with twin towers and sits at the top of a wide staircase, giving it a strong presence overlooking the city below. It is also the burial place of Emperor Charles I of Austria, which adds a bit of historical interest to the site. From the terrace in front, you get wide views over Funchal and out toward the ocean, making it easy to combine architecture with landscape in your shots. The stairs leading up to the church work well as leading lines, and you can shoot from different levels to change your perspective.
