Pico do Areeiro

Pico do Areeiro, at 1,818 m (5,965 ft) high is a mountain located on the Portuguese island and autonomous region of Madeira, the third highest on the island. Situated within the mountainous interior of the island roughly halfway between the northern and southern coasts. From the top, visitors can look down on the clouds on most days. The air is fresh and clear and the sun is very bright. On a clear day it is possible to see the neighboring island of Porto Santo, 48 km to the northeast. This is also the starting point for one of the most spectacular trails (PR1 Vereda do Areeiro Hiking Trail) to the archipelago’s highest point, Pico Ruivo, at 1,862 meters. (Madeira Island, Portugal)
