About Itzenplitzer Weiher
Itzenplitzer Weiher is an amazing hidden gem tucked away in the forest just west of Schiffweiler. The river was dammed in 1878 to store water for the steam engines at the Itzenplitz coal mine next door and created this peaceful little pond. Standing out in the water along eastern shore is the Pumpenhaus, a cute little tower on a sandstone base built in 1908 with a small footbridge linking it to the bank. Over the years local volunteers have slowly restored it by hand back to its original look, and now you can book it as a unique location for a wedding. There is a small path circling the pond where you can set up to use that footbridge as a leading line straight out to the tower, or back up a bit further to fit in more of the water and the woods behind it. Early morning is the quietest time here so you will have lots of space to experiment with compositions all around the pond. On a still day the round tower reflects cleanly in the pond, so it's worth getting low at the water's edge. Autumn is a great time to come, when the forest around the pond changes colour and the reflections really pop. The whole are is easily accessible with a car park right beside the water, and an easy loop follows the whole shoreline around the pond. Plan for extra time while you are here since the you've got Itzenplitzer Pingen Pfad trail starts from the same car park and leads to an old mine. (Schiffweiler, Saarland, Germany)
