Kálfshamarsviti is a stark white square lighthouse perched above one of Iceland's most striking displays of hexagonal basalt columns, where the geometric rock formations meet the North Atlantic in a naturally dramatic composition. The columns themselves are the real subject here, so get low and work along the base of the cliff to emphasize their scale and repeating geometry, using a wide angle lens to pull in both the columns and the lighthouse above. The interplay between the angular rock and the crashing surf rewards patience, especially when waves push into the gaps between formations. Overcast light softens the contrast and brings out the cool grey tones in the basalt, while golden hour warms the white lighthouse tower nicely against moody skies. The site is accessible off Route 711 with a short walk to the cliff edge; watch your footing on wet rock near the water. (Kálfshamarsvík, Norðurland Vestra, Iceland)
