Kanaha Beach
Kanaha Beach is a long, windswept stretch of white sand on Maui's north shore, best known for the constant parade of windsurfers and kiteboarders that fill the frame on almost any given day. The combination of colorful sails against the deep blue water and the jagged West Maui Mountains in the background gives you a naturally layered composition with very little effort. Shoot from the shoreline with a telephoto lens, around 200-400mm, to compress the action and pull the mountains closer into the frame. Early morning offers softer light and fewer crowds, while midday brings the most wind activity if you want peak action shots. The beach is easy to access with a parking lot nearby, and you can walk the shoreline to find the angle where the sails align best with the mountain ridgeline behind them.
