Built from over 14,000 coral slabs quarried from offshore reefs, Kawaiahaʻo Church is one of Honolulu's most historically significant landmarks and a striking subject for architectural photography. The white New England-style facade contrasts beautifully against the deep blue Hawaiian sky, making it ideal for midmorning shooting when the sun is high enough to illuminate the front facade without harsh shadows. Position yourself across Punchbowl Street for a wide establishing shot that captures the full structure, or move in close to photograph the textured coral block walls, which reveal incredible detail and history up close. A 24-70mm lens gives you flexibility to work both the full exterior and tighter architectural details. The surrounding historic cemetery, with worn headstones and mature trees, adds foreground interest and context. Weekday mornings tend to be quieter, giving you space to compose without crowds.
