Kenmure Castle Ruins
Standing on a rocky hill and formerly also defended by marshy ground, Kenmure Castle ruins are an imposing tower house of three storeys and an attic. The castle has had a colourful history of royal visitors and rugged revenge battles. It was torched after the Gordons entertained Mary, Queen of Scots, here in 1568. In 1633 Sir Robert Gordon of Kenmure was made Viscount Kenmure, and the castle was again burned in 1650 after the family supported Charles I. The Gordon family sold the estate in 1935 and it was refurbished to be used as a hotel. That only lasted for a few years, it was stripped in the 1950s and is now a ruined but impressive shell.
