Kolugljúfur is a dramatic canyon in northwest Iceland where the Víðidalsá river carves through layered basalt before dropping into a series of powerful waterfalls, with walls of moss-covered rock creating an intensely green, textured frame around the rushing water. You can walk along the canyon rim to find multiple compositions, from wide shots that capture the full depth of the gorge to tighter frames focused on the falls themselves tumbling into the narrow chasm below. Overcast days are ideal here, as Iceland's flat diffused light brings out the deep greens of the moss and eliminates harsh shadows inside the canyon. A wide-angle lens works well for showing the scale of the walls, while a mid-range zoom lets you isolate individual cascades. The site is accessible directly from Road 715 with a short walk to the rim; stay mindful of the unfenced edges, which drop steeply without warning. (Víðidalstunga, Norðurland vestra, Iceland)
