Lac de l'Eychauda is a striking glacial lake in the French Alps, its milky turquoise water fed by meltwater from the Séguret Foran glacier that looms above it at 2514 meters elevation. The combination of that signature mineral-blue color, surrounding rocky peaks, and frequent floating ice blocks even into late July makes it genuinely unlike most alpine lakes. Shoot from the northern shoreline to frame the glacier as a backdrop with the lake filling your foreground, or get low on the rocks at the water's edge to emphasize the ice and color. Midday light is surprisingly effective here since it punches down into the water and intensifies the turquoise tones. A wide angle lens between 16 and 24mm works well for capturing both the lake and the peaks together. The hike up is strenuous and only accessible during summer months, so plan for good fitness and stable weather before setting out. (Pelvoux, Hautes-Alpes, France)
