About Lago Sucotto

Lago Sucotto is the first in a series of the reservoirs you reach on the lakes circuit above Valgoglio. It's a working hydro basin rather than a just a simple reservoir. This plateau is home to five of these basins, all part of the same ENEL scheme, and Sucotto sits at the bottom end of the chain. The shoreline has an amazing view look out across the water at the endless ridge lines sitting in every direction. Because it's a working reservoir the level changes throughout the seasons, so every time you visit it will look a little different up here. On a still morning the peaks reflect back at you off the surface. The climb up is also full of photo worthy views since the trail runs beside the penstock most of the way and that steel pipe cutting through the woods is a unique shooting subject in itself. Getting there is the work, but definitely worth the effort and planning! You park at Bortolotti above Valgoglio, from there it's about an hour and a half of steady climbing on trails 228 and 268 through the woods before it opens out. Rifugio Capanna Cernello sits just above the lake if you want food or stay the night to experiment with astro or sunrise photography. Snow closes the upper section of these trails, usually sometime in early autumn depending on the weather each year. (Valgoglio, Lombardy, Italy)
