Lake Askja
Askja is a remote volcanic caldera lake sitting inside one of Iceland's most dramatic highland landscapes, where raw black lava fields, ash plains, and steep caldera walls surround a strikingly blue, impossibly deep body of water. The sense of scale here is immense, and compositions that place the lake against the encircling rim work especially well, particularly from the descent path where you get a sweeping elevated view before reaching the water. A wide angle lens suits this location well, letting you pull in the volcanic foreground textures alongside the lake and sky. The nearby Víti crater lake, a smaller geothermal pool with milky turquoise water, adds a strong secondary subject and contrasts beautifully with the darker tones of the main caldera. Overcast light softens the harsh reflections and brings out the color of the water. The road is only accessible in summer and requires a 4WD vehicle. (Vatnajökull National Park, Iceland)
