Aldeyjarfoss is a dramatic highland waterfall where the Skjálfandafljót river plunges 20 meters into a rugged canyon, surrounded by striking hexagonal basalt columns that create one of Iceland's most visually compelling geological contrasts. The dark, angular columns stacked against the churning white water give you a natural compositional frame that almost any angle rewards. Shoot from the rim looking down and across to capture the full column formations curving around the falls, or work your way to the lower viewpoint for a closer perspective with the water filling the foreground. Overcast days are ideal here since soft diffused light reduces harsh shadows on the textured basalt and keeps the white water from blowing out. A wide-angle lens works best to take in both the falls and the surrounding columns together. The road in is unpaved and requires a 4WD vehicle, so plan accordingly and check road conditions before heading out. (Highlands, Northeast Iceland, Iceland)
