About Lake Padden
Lake Padden is a peaceful lake surrounded by a forested city park on Bellingham's south side. Photogenically, tall firs and cedars run right down to the shoreline on all side of the lake. A flat gravel path circles the whole lake, quite close to the water, providing endless shooting opportunities to match whatever the light conditions are. You can set up to shoot from one of the fishing docks for crisp reflections, or look for the small coves along the loop where the shoreline curves back into frame. Calm mornings are the ideal time to go. Before the wind picks up and the paddlers head out, the lake is often glassy and the dark green shoreline is the perfect spot to experiment with reflections. By middle of the day the lake is often dotted with paddlers that are fun to add to your composition to break up all the green tones. In autumn, the big leaf maples along the trail turn rich colours that contrast beautifully against the green conifers. A quieter upper trail sits above the south side of the lake and gives you a completely different, often moodier, view. There are several parking lots within the park and the Samish Way entrance. If you come early in the day you'll often have the trail all to yourself. (Bellingham, Washington, United States)
