About Teddy Bear Cove
Crushed clam shells give Teddy Bear Cove its pale, almost white sand is it looks out over Chuckanut Bay just south of Bellingham. Twisted madrona trees cover the headland with their orange-red bark peeling back to smooth green trunks. Scenic trails through the trees and give amazing views both looking down over the beach and over the entire bay. At low tide when the waterline drops ledges of sandstone appear that have slowly been worn smoothover hundreds of years. The tide often leaves behind a variety of tide pools that pair perfectly with the ledges to make a strong foreground with the bay stretching out behind them. From higher ground you can experiment with finding a leaning madrona trunk to contrast against the water or on a clear day focus on the San Juan Islands off in the distance. The bay faces west, so late afternoon sun warms the sandstone and lights the madrona bark from the side. Clear evenings end with the sun dropping toward the islands with amazing colours. So once you arrive, plan on staying late into the evening. The cove is easily accessible from the North Chuckanut Mountain Trailhead, with a hike of roughly about 2 km one way on well marked trails. Once the trail crosses Chuckanut Drive it becomes steeper with switchbacks down through cedar and fir to get you down to the water level. Just before you get to the beach the trail does cross an active rail line. There is a small pull-out along Chuckanut Drive as a shortcut to join the trail, but this lot fills fast on the weekends.
