Levitated Mass | LACMA
Levitated Mass is Michael Heizer's monumental sculpture at LACMA, where a 340-ton granite boulder sits atop a sloped concrete trench you can walk through, creating the illusion that the rock floats above your head. The real shot happens from inside the trench, looking up with a wide angle lens to frame the boulder against the sky, which gives you a genuinely striking and disorienting perspective. The trench walls create strong leading lines that draw the eye upward, and early morning light keeps harsh shadows minimal while giving the concrete a clean, even tone. Shooting from ground level at either end of the trench lets you capture the full scale of the boulder against visitors for a sense of proportion. The sculpture is free to visit on the LACMA campus along Wilshire Boulevard, accessible any time the outdoor grounds are open, and a 16-35mm lens works well in the confined trench space.
