Lisbon's iconic yellow trams are one of the most recognizable subjects in European street photography, and the tight, cobblestoned streets of Alfama and Baixa give you naturally strong compositions as the cars squeeze through narrow passages. Line 28 offers the most photogenic route, winding through steep hills where you can position yourself at a bend and let the tram fill the frame against tiled building facades or colorful laundry lines strung overhead. A short to mid telephoto lens, something in the 50-85mm range, works well for compressing the scene and isolating the tram against its surroundings. Morning light is ideal before the streets fill with tourists, and overcast days soften the contrast on the bright yellow bodywork. Stand at Rua da Conceição or near the Graça miradouro for reliable spots where the trams slow down on the curves, giving you a clean shot without motion blur. (Lisbon, Portugal)
