Little Church Around the Corner

Tucked behind a lych-gate and a surprisingly lush garden on East 29th Street, this small Gothic Revival Episcopal church feels like a piece of the English countryside dropped into Midtown Manhattan. The contrast between the weathered stone facade, climbing ivy, and the surrounding city buildings is what makes it so photogenic. Shoot from inside the garden looking back toward the entrance gate with the church framing behind, or get low to use the garden's winding path as a leading line toward the nave. A wide angle lens works well to capture the full scene, but a short telephoto helps compress the church against the taller buildings behind it. Overcast days are ideal since the soft diffused light flatters the stone textures and eliminates harsh shadows in the enclosed garden space. The garden is open to the public during daytime hours and the intimate scale means you can explore multiple compositions without moving far. (NoMad, Manhattan, New York, United States)
