Loch Damh

Loch Damh is a long, narrow freshwater loch tucked into the remote hills of Wester Ross, surrounded by rugged peaks that reflect cleanly in the water on calm mornings. The loch stretches roughly east to west, giving you strong compositional lines to work with, and the surrounding ridgelines of Beinn Damh and its neighbours add drama to almost any frame. Shoot from the southern shore road, where you can pull off and position the mountains as a backdrop with the loch filling your foreground; a wide angle lens works well here to capture the full sweep of the landscape. Early morning offers the best light and the greatest chance of still water for reflections, while overcast days soften the contrast and bring out the rich greens and purples of the heather and bracken. The single-track road along the loch requires care, but access is straightforward from Torridon village. (Torridon, Highland, Scotland)
