Lundy Lake

Lundy Lake sits in a narrow glacial canyon in the Eastern Sierra, surrounded by steep talus slopes, aspen groves, and jagged peaks that drop dramatically into the water. The reflections here are exceptional on calm mornings, when the canyon walls and sky mirror cleanly off the surface; position yourself low along the eastern shore to maximize the reflection and include the rocky foreground for depth. A wide-angle lens works well for capturing the full sweep of the canyon, while a short telephoto lets you compress the peaks behind the lake. Early morning is ideal, with soft alpenglow on the cliffs above and still water before any wind picks up. Fall is the standout season, when the aspens along the shoreline and up the canyon walls turn gold. The lake is accessible via a short drive off Highway 395, with a dirt road running close to the water and easy pullouts for shooting. (Lundy, California, United States)
