The Ma Wan Breakwater encloses a sheltered cove on the quieter western side of Ma Wan Island, where weathered fishing boats and traditional sampans rest in calm, shallow water surrounded by rugged cement sea walls. Low tide is when this spot truly comes alive, with boats sitting grounded on the muddy floor and reflected light creating texture across the scene. Shoot from along the breakwater looking inward to compress the boats against each other, or get low near the waterline to emphasize hull shapes and reflections. A mid-range zoom in the 24-70mm range handles most compositions well here. Golden hour morning light is ideal, giving warm tones across the boats without harsh shadows. Ma Wan is accessible by ferry from Tsuen Wan or Tung Chung, and the breakwater area is a short walk from the ferry pier through the old village. (Ma Wan Island, Hong Kong)
