Built in 1847, Man Mo Temple is one of Hong Kong's oldest and most atmospheric places of worship, dedicated to the gods of literature and war. Inside, the air is thick with incense smoke drifting up from massive hanging coils that crowd the ceiling, creating a moody, layered atmosphere that rewards patient photography. Shoot from low angles looking up to emphasize the spirals against the ornate red and gold interior, or frame the altar through the doorway for natural depth. Light inside is dim and warm, so bring a fast prime lens in the 24mm to 35mm range and push your ISO rather than using flash, which will flatten the scene. Visit on weekday mornings when crowds are thinner and worshippers add quiet life to the frame. The temple sits on Hollywood Road and is easy to reach on foot from Sheung Wan MTR station.
