About Molen Bovenrijge
Molen Bovenrijge is a small saw and grain mill sitting photogenically along the Damsterdiep canal in Ten Boer. It has a unique shape with an octagonal body sitting with a pair of sheds, and a wooden walkway circling it. The name comes from Bovenrijge, the hamlet between Thesinge and Ten Boer where it originally stood in 1903. Plan on shooting it from the far side of canal (along Rijksweg Rd). On a still morning the water creates an amazing reflection of the windmill. Plus the round white Widde Meuln sits close enough along the bank that you can easily add it to your compositions. Saturdays during the warmer months are the best time to visit. A volunteer miller is on site to open up the windmill and in a good wind demonstrates how it saws long planks. It's the perfect spot to experiment with long exposure photography by trying out slower shutter speeds to blur the turning sails against the sky. Inside, the original log carriage still feeds timber through the saw, alongside a band saw and lathe that also run on wind power. It's a quick photography stop with lots of space to set up various compositions, plus watching timber get cut by wind is hard to beat. (Ten Boer, Groningen, Netherlands)
