Monument Falls
Monument Falls is a compact but striking 5-foot waterfall on the Ausable River in the Adirondacks, where the water funnels through a narrow rocky channel before dropping into a clear pool below. Get low and close to emphasize the cascade against the surrounding moss-covered rocks, or step back to incorporate the river's flow as a leading line into the frame. A wide-angle lens works well for tight environmental shots, while a mid-range zoom lets you isolate the falls from the opposite bank. Overcast days are ideal here since the diffused light reduces harsh shadows in the gorge and keeps colors rich and saturated. The small pull-off along Highway 86 makes access straightforward, and the short, well-maintained trail means you can be shooting within minutes of parking. A polarizing filter is worth bringing to cut glare and bring out the texture of the water. (North Elba, New York, United States)
