High Gorge Falls
Tucked into the Adirondacks, High Gorge Falls is a privately owned 22-acre park built around a dramatic gorge where rushing water carves through steep cliff walls. The wooden walkways bolted into the rock face put you directly alongside the falls at multiple levels, giving you both wide establishing shots and tight close-ups of cascading water without any scrambling. A wide-angle lens works well for capturing the full depth of the gorge and the layered cliff textures, while a telephoto lets you isolate individual falls and rock details. Overcast days are ideal since the high canyon walls already create harsh shadows in direct sun, and diffused light brings out the rich greens of the moss and surrounding foliage. Come early in the day before crowds arrive on the narrow walkways. There is an entrance fee to access the park, so check hours before visiting. (Wilmington, New York, United States)
