Moraine Lake Lodge

Moraine Lake Lodge - Photo by bkeobke1 / 1

Moraine Lake is one of the most iconic landscape photography locations in the Canadian Rockies, sitting in the Valley of the Ten Peaks with impossibly vivid turquoise water created by glacial rock flour suspended in the lake. The most celebrated composition is from the Rockpile, a short two-minute scramble up a trail of boulders at the lake's northeast end, which puts you above the water with all ten peaks framing the scene behind it. Shoot here at sunrise for golden light on the peaks and calm water that gives you clean reflections before the wind picks up. A wide angle lens in the 16 to 24mm range works well from the Rockpile, while a longer focal length lets you compress the peaks from the lakeshore trail. Parking fills before dawn in summer, so plan to arrive before 5am or take the Parks Canada shuttle from Lake Louise. (Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada)
