Mount Rushmore is one of the most iconic American landmarks. These massive sculptures of four of America's presidents are world renown for their stunning appearance and scale. The work of Gutzon Borglum, the busts are carved into the granite rock of Mount Rushmore in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The Mount Rushmore sculpture was never completed, and initial designs intended to carve the presidents down to the waste; however, funding ran out. Gutzon Borglum also died in 1941. Regardless, the unfinished carving became an iconic US landmark and is called the "shrine of democracy." The site is visited by more than two million tourists annually. (Keystone, South Dakota, USA)
