Mount Tamalpais

Mount Tamalpais - Photo by jpramzyfotos1 / 1

Mount Tamalpais rises above Marin County with sweeping views of the Bay Area, the Pacific coast, and the famous fog that rolls in from the ocean and fills the valleys below like a slow-moving sea. The summit area gives you wide panoramic compositions, but the real magic happens when marine layer clouds pour through the gaps between the ridgelines, creating layered, dramatic scenes that reward patience. A wide angle lens works well for capturing the full sweep of the landscape, while a telephoto lets you compress distant hills and isolate pockets of fog. Golden hour is excellent here, especially in late afternoon when warm light catches the tops of the hills while fog fills the canyons below. Drive up to the East Peak parking area for the easiest access to elevated viewpoints, and arrive before sunset to scout your position before the light changes.
