Muir Beach Overlook
Perched high above the Marin Headlands, this dramatic overlook delivers sweeping views of the Pacific coastline, with rugged cliffs dropping into churning surf below and the Golden Gate strait visible on clear days. The main platform gives you a wide vista, but walking a short distance along the ridge trail opens up additional angles where you can layer the foreground cliffs against the open ocean for a sense of depth and scale. Shoot facing south to include the headlands curving into the distance, or look north toward the rocky coves and isolated beaches below. Foggy mornings create moody, atmospheric images with mist rolling through the hills, while late afternoon light warms the golden grass and cliff faces. A wide angle lens suits the expansive scenery well, though a telephoto is useful during whale migration season, roughly November through June, when spouts are visible offshore.
