About Mushroom Rock State Park
Mushroom Rock State Park is the smallest state park in Kansas, and was created to protect a handful of sandstone formations sitting out in the countryside. Unique shapes have slowly been created through thousands of years of erosion so now the harder rock has been left standing while all the softer sand and rock has worn away. The largest mushroom is roughly eight metres across carefully balanced on a narrower stem. Getting low and shooting up lets the caps sit in the blue skyline. If you can put a person in the frame it helps highlight the scale of the rock mushrooms. Sunrise and sunset both work because the park is open to the flat countryside all around. Late spring brings big storm clouds, which adds a dynamic sky to a wide shot. This is the perfect spot to experiment with astrophotography since the nights are very dark out here. There is lots of parking at the entrance and everything is within a few minutes walk. (Two short trails cover the whole park.) Kanopolis Lake is close if you want to add more stops to your photography day. (Carneiro, Kansas, USA)
