About Nauset Lighthouse
Nauset Lighthouse is an eye catching cast iron tower painted white on the lower half and bright red above, capped by a black lantern room. It sits in a small clearing looking out over a sandy bluff that drops to the Atlantic. There is room to move here. Backing up to the edges of the clearing let you pair the whole tower against open sky, or step in close and shoot up the white lower half so the red band and black lantern stack overhead. The grey shingled keeper's house with its red roof sits at the tower's shoulder, close enough to work both into one frame. Since the lighthouse looks out to the east, morning is the perfect time to be here. The first light comes right off the water and the red paint goes deep and warm, giving your compositions a peaceful vibe with an amazing pop of red. If you can try to stay for dusk (or come back for a second visit). The beacon is run by the Nauset Light Preservation Society and still lights up every night, alternating white and red every ten seconds, so you can time a long exposure to catch colour in the lantern. The lighthouse is easily accessible with lots of parking at the Nauset Light Beach lot directly across the road, although there is with a seashore fee in spring/summer. It can fill up quickly on summer mornings so make sure to come early if sunrise photography is your goal. The grounds are open to explore all year round, and volunteers run tower climbs on a seasonal schedule so if you are lucky you might be able to shoot from the top.
