New London Harbor Light is Connecticut's oldest lighthouse, a stately granite tower standing 90 feet tall at the entrance to New London Harbor, and its classic New England form makes it a strong subject against both sky and water. You can photograph it from the adjacent shoreline at Pequot Avenue, where a low angle emphasizes the tower's height against the sky, or pull back to include the rocky waterfront and passing boat traffic for a sense of place. A telephoto lens lets you isolate the tower and compress the background, while a wider focal length works well when you want to include the surrounding landscape. Early morning light hits the seaward face cleanly, and overcast days bring out the texture in the granite without harsh shadows. Street parking is available along Pequot Avenue, and the lighthouse grounds are accessible on foot, giving you room to walk around and find your angle. (New London, Connecticut, United States)
