Built in the 18th century, Fort Griswold's entrance tunnel is a narrow stone passageway that frames the interior of the fort in a natural barrel composition, making it one of the more compelling architectural details on the site. Position yourself just inside or just outside the tunnel opening and let the curved stonework act as a leading frame around the grassy parade ground or the sky beyond. A wide angle lens in the 16-24mm range works well here to capture the full arc of the tunnel while keeping the scene within in focus. Early morning or overcast days are ideal, as harsh midday sun creates strong contrast between the dark interior stone and the bright exterior that can be difficult to expose correctly. The fort is open seasonally and parking is straightforward, so arriving early gives you the space to work the tunnel from multiple positions without crowds. (Groton, Connecticut, United States)
