Nieuwe Kerk sits on Dam Square in the heart of Amsterdam, a late Gothic church with an elaborate facade, ornate gabled roofline, and rich architectural detail that rewards close attention. You can shoot from the square itself to capture the full exterior, using the wide open plaza to pull back and frame the church against the sky, or move in tight with a longer lens to isolate the decorative stonework and weathered textures. The church shares the square with the Royal Palace, so wider compositions can include both buildings for a sense of historic Amsterdam in a single frame. Overcast days work particularly well here since they soften shadows and bring out the detail in the stonework without harsh contrast. Early morning is your best bet for quiet streets and clean shots before the square fills with crowds and market stalls. A 24-70mm range covers most situations well.
