OZ Achterburgwal
This narrow canal cuts through Amsterdam's oldest neighborhood, offering some of the city's most layered and characterful street photography. The canal itself is flanked by tall, leaning gable houses reflected in the dark water below, and the overhanging trees create a natural frame that softens the scene without hiding the dense, historic architecture. Shoot from the bridges looking along the length of the canal to compress the buildings into a tight, repeating pattern; a 35mm to 85mm lens works well here. Early morning is your best window, when the crowds are thin, the light is cool and even, and the water holds clean reflections. Avoid midday when tourists fill every corner and harsh shadows break up the facades. The canal runs roughly north to south, so golden hour light catches the western-facing buildings well in late afternoon. (Amsterdam, Netherlands)
