Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes stands on rue Sainte-Catherine Est in Montreal's Quartier Latin, boxed in by university buildings. The Sulpicians built it through the 1870s and it was the first church in the Americas named for Notre-Dame de Lourdes. The style is Romano-Byzantine, which makes it really stand out on this street.The dome was originally hand painted and the decoration on the walls below is built to lead up to it. Try to stand directly under the centre of the dome and shoot straight up so the pattern fills the frame. Light inside is low, so try to find yourself a steady support to lean on since no tripods are allowed. Gilding and deep colour cover the walls and arches, and create amazing contrast with the stonework. The organ case at the back of the nave holds a Casavant Frères Opus 1, the first instrument that company ever built. A lower chapel in the basement copies the grotto at Lourdes. Outside, a gilded Virgin on the front catches the light at night. The building is very ornate against the concrete university buildings around it.
