Old Church

Old Church - Photo by Shawn M. Kent1 / 1

This red-brick Catholic church in the Verdun neighbourhood is a striking example of late 19th-century Quebec ecclesiastical architecture, with its tall twin towers and ornate stone detailing making it a rewarding subject for architectural photography. Shoot from across the street to capture the full symmetrical facade, or move in close to isolate the carved stonework, arched windows, and ironwork details with a longer lens. A 24-70mm zoom gives you flexibility between wide establishing shots and tighter detail frames. Overcast days work especially well here, as the soft diffused light brings out the texture of the brick and stone without harsh shadows cutting across the facade. Early morning on weekdays means minimal foot traffic and cleaner foregrounds. The surrounding residential streets also offer interesting context shots, placing the church against the low-rise urban fabric of this historic Montreal neighbourhood. (Montreal, Quebec, Canada)
