Fort de la Montagne
This hilltop fortification on the campus of Collège de Montréal preserves two striking limestone towers dating to 1694, making them among the oldest standing structures on the island. The towers have a rugged, timeworn texture that rewards close shooting with a macro or short telephoto lens, while wider shots let you frame them against the surrounding trees or open sky. Soft overcast light works especially well here, reducing harsh shadows on the uneven stonework and bringing out the subtle tones in the pale stone. Early morning gives you quieter conditions before students and pedestrians fill the grounds. Position yourself low and close to emphasize the height and mass of the towers, or step back to include the surrounding greenery for context. Access is generally open during daylight hours, though the campus setting means foot traffic can be a factor on weekdays. (Montreal, Quebec, Canada)
