This ruined church on the western edge of Islay sits within a historic graveyard and offers a hauntingly beautiful combination of crumbling stone walls, overgrown graves, and a striking carved Celtic cross that serves as an immediate foreground anchor. Frame the cross against the church facade for a layered composition, or move around to use the roofless gable ends against the open sky. The surrounding headstones provide strong foreground interest, and the weathered textures throughout reward close detail shots as well as wide establishing frames. Overcast days work exceptionally well here, as soft diffused light brings out the detail in the carved stonework without harsh shadows; golden hour adds warmth but the flat grey skies typical of Islay are genuinely flattering. A wide angle lens in the 16-24mm range suits the site well, and the graveyard is freely accessible on foot with no significant barriers. (Kilchoman, Isle of Islay, Scotland)
