Ottawa National Holocaust Memorial

Ottawa National Holocaust Memorial - Photo by Shawn M. Kent1 / 1

Opened in 2017 and designed by Daniel Libeskind, this angular concrete memorial sits near Parliament Hill and uses sharp, fractured geometry to create a powerful visual subject. Six triangular concrete forms rise from the ground, casting dramatic shadows and creating narrow passages that reward wide-angle exploration. Walk through the corridors between the forms to find compressed perspectives and strong leading lines, or pull back to capture the full sculptural composition against the sky. Early morning and overcast days work best, as soft diffused light brings out the texture of the raw concrete without harsh shadows overwhelming the details. Golden hour adds warmth to the stone and can create striking contrast. A wide-angle lens in the 16-35mm range is ideal for capturing the scale inside the passages, while a slightly longer focal length works well for isolating individual details and relief carvings.
