River Power
This striking electrical transmission tower rises directly out of the Ottawa River, creating an industrial subject set against flowing water that makes for an unexpectedly compelling composition. You can shoot from the Quebec shoreline near Gatineau or find angles along the Ottawa side, framing the tower with the river stretching out on either side. Wide to mid-range focal lengths work well for capturing the full scene, while a telephoto lets you compress the tower against the far bank or sky. Overcast days soften the light and reduce harsh reflections on the water, but golden hour adds warm tones to the metal structure and creates appealing reflections on calmer stretches of the river. A polarizing filter helps cut glare on bright days. The surrounding riverbanks are accessible on foot, giving you room to experiment with different foreground elements like rocks or shoreline vegetation. (Gatineau, Quebec, Canada)
