Pakenham Five Span Bridge

This five-span stone arch bridge is one of the most photographed structures in Eastern Ontario, built in 1903 from locally quarried stone and stretching gracefully across the Mississippi River. Position yourself on the riverbank to the west or east to capture the full row of arches reflected in the water below; a wide to standard lens in the 24-50mm range works well for showing all five spans in context. Early morning light is ideal, giving you soft, even illumination across the stonework without harsh shadows. Spring is an exceptional time to visit when snowmelt raises the river level and pushes fast-moving water through the arches, adding energy and texture to your shots. The surrounding town is quiet and easy to navigate on foot, and the riverbanks offer multiple vantage points at different elevations so you can experiment with both low water-level angles and slightly elevated compositions from the road.
