Parliament Hill - West Block

Parliament Hill - West Block - Photo by rudramakwana1 / 1

The West Block is one of Parliament Hill's original Victorian Gothic buildings, featuring ornate limestone stonework, pointed turrets, and decorative gabled windows that reward close-up architectural shooting as much as wide establishing shots. Position yourself along Wellington Street or within the Hill's grounds to frame the tower against the sky, or move in tight with a 50mm to 100mm lens to isolate the carved stone details and window tracery. The north and west facades catch excellent light in the morning, while late afternoon sun warms the honey-coloured limestone beautifully. The grounds are publicly accessible and relatively flat, making it easy to move around and experiment with low angles that emphasize the height of the turrets. During summer, the lawns stay active with visitors and ceremonial activity, adding a human element to your compositions. (Ottawa, Ontario, Canada)
