The Paulava Republic was a small self-governing peasant community founded by Paweł Ksawery Brzostowski, a Catholic priest. The community lived around the Merkinė Manor - the ruins of it are all that remain of the community today. It was a microstate consisting of about 800 residents with its own parliament, army, and laws. It formed in 1769 and was dissolved by 1795. (Merkinė, Lithuania)
