Peacock Pool is a striking alpine tarn nestled in a glacier-carved cirque on the east flank of Longs Peak, fed by Columbine Falls and framed by sheer cliffs and wildflower meadows. The water takes on remarkable multi-hued tones when viewed from above, so if you can gain some elevation on the surrounding slopes, that elevated angle is worth the effort. At lake level, the falls make a compelling background, especially when composed with the reflective surface of the pool in the foreground. Early morning light hits the cirque walls beautifully and minimizes harsh shadows in this steep terrain. A wide angle lens works well to capture the full scale of the cliffs and falls together, while a telephoto lets you isolate detail in the water color and rock faces. The hike in is long and strenuous, so plan for a full day and arrive at the trailhead before dawn. (Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado, United States)
