La Martre Lighthouse is a unique octagonal wooden tower with a bright red paint job. It sits on a bank above the St. Lawrence, in the small village of La Martre on the Gaspé coast. The tower went up in 1906 and is still used today. Shooting the red tower against a blue sky or the open water give you an amazing contrast. The colour pops on a clear day, especially when using a polarizer for the sky. You can easily move in close to capture the details in the red shingles and the little porch over the entrance. It's the only lighthouse in Quebec still running the old way during the day with its' system of weights and cables that turns the original lens, and if you are patient you can capture it at work. There is an interpretive trail that offers a variety of angles with the water behind the tower. The keeper's house and small museum are open in summer, although there is a small fee to access them. Avenue du Phare is an easy detour along Route 132, making the lighthouse very easy to access at any time of day. Ideally you can come on a bright day and let the red do the rest.
